- fighting, grappling or dead bees immediately outside the entrance;
- unusual, hurried flight around the front of the hive;
- bees attempting to enter through gaps rather than approaching normally;
- crumbs of wax near the entrance, which can indicate stores are being uncapped;
- a small colony trying to defend an unnecessarily wide opening.
Do not confuse a busy entrance on a warm afternoon with robbing. Normal traffic is purposeful and usually includes pollen-bearing workers. Robbers may weave around the hive, probe joints and return persistently after being challenged.
How small should the entrance be?
There is no single measurement that suits every colony. Choose an opening that the colony can defend while still allowing normal traffic. Strong colonies gathering from ivy may need more room than a small colony, and an entrance can be widened again if bees are consistently queuing in calm weather.

If one colony is being overwhelmed, reduce its entrance immediately and assess why it is vulnerable. Confirm that it is queenright, has an adequate adult bee population and shows no signs of disease. Weak colonies may need a considered management decision; an entrance block alone cannot make an unviable colony ready for winter.
When should you fit a mouse guard?
An entrance block and a mouse guard perform different jobs. The block controls the size of the doorway; a mouse guard prevents small rodents entering and nesting in the hive during winter.
