A reminder: Beekeeping is a privilege, not a shortcut
You have been warned, beekeeping is one of life’s true pleasures. As beekeepers, we are incredibly fortunate to work alongside such beautiful, complex and vital creatures as the honeybee. They are not just producers of honey, they are essential pollinators, supporting ecosystems and food production across the world.
With that privilege comes responsibility.

Recently, we came across an example of bees being kept in completely unsuitable conditions (see images). While it may have been done with curiosity or good intentions, this setup represents poor beekeeping practice and highlights exactly what not to do.
Bees require:
· Proper ventilation
· Space to grow and regulate temperature
· Access to natural light and a clear flight path
· A well-structured hive designed for their needs
Keeping bees in confined, enclosed, or poorly ventilated environments can cause extreme stress, overheating, disease and even colony loss. It can also lead to defensive behaviour, putting both people and the bees at risk.
Good beekeeping is about working with nature, not against it.

At Hagens Bees, we are passionate about helping both new and experienced beekeepers start the right way. That’s why we provide quality nucleus colonies (Nucs) that are:
· Healthy and well-established
· Carefully managed
· Ready to thrive in a proper hive environment
Starting with a strong, well-cared-for colony gives your bees the best chance of success, and gives you a far more rewarding beekeeping experience.
Let this be a reminder: Beekeeping isn’t just about having bees, it’s about caring for them properly. When done right, it’s not only productive, it’s deeply fulfilling.
