The most important point is that Tap Traps should not be placed directly next to or in front of hives. Because they use bait to attract hornets and wasps, positioning them too close can actually draw predators into the apiary and increase pressure on the bees.

Instead, traps should be positioned in the surrounding area, creating a buffer zone around the apiary. Good locations include hedgerows, trees, fence lines, or the edges of fields and gardens. The aim is to intercept hornets and wasps before they reach the hives, rather than dealing with them once they are already there.

They work best when placed along natural flight paths, such as near flowering plants, water sources, or along woodland edges where pests are likely to travel. A height of around one to one and a half metres is generally effective, ideally in a slightly sheltered or partially shaded position.

Tap Traps are most effective when used early in the season as a preventative measure, helping to reduce the number of queens and therefore limiting the overall pest population later in the year.

Bait tip: 

A simple and effective homemade bait for Asian hornets is a mix of dark beer, white wine, and sugar. The beer and sugar attract hornets, while the white wine helps deter honeybees. Use roughly equal parts beer and white wine with a small amount of sugar added. Refresh regularly to maintain effectiveness, especially in warm weather.
