Original Bat Box

As natural roosting sites continue to disappear, bat boxes play an increasingly important role in supporting these vital and protected mammals. This Original Bat Box provides a secure, high-capacity roost designed to suit a variety of UK bat species, helping to replace lost habitats in gardens, woodlands and on buildings.

Constructed from solid FSC®-certified timber, the bat box is built for durability, longevity and excellent thermal insulation. Two separate internal chambers create a stable and sheltered environment, while the narrow entrance slot and substantial timber construction help deter predators. A rear internal “ladder” allows bats to climb easily into position, encouraging safe and comfortable roosting.

The box can be installed on a mature tree or fixed to a building using the pre-drilled back plate hanger. A discreet swing panel allows for cleaning if required, but only by a licensed bat worker, in line with wildlife protection regulations. This is incredibly important.

Where to site:

Position the bat box 2.5–5 metres above ground on a building or mature tree. Ideally, it should face north, south-east or south-west, receiving partial sunlight during the day. Installing the box along an existing bat flight path or near known feeding areas will increase the likelihood of occupation.

Important wildlife guidance:

Bats are a Schedule 1 protected species under the Wildlife & Countryside Act. It is illegal to disturb a bat roost or handle bats without the appropriate licence. Bat boxes should only be opened or inspected by a licensed bat worker. Occupancy can be monitored without disturbance by checking for small droppings beneath the box or observing activity at dusk as bats emerge to feed.
