Varroa counts are often too high at the start of winter in December. Treating with Formic Pro in October or even November, our local beekeeper tells us, is very effective, and bees often require no further treatments until spring sometime. See our Formic Pro trial data.
Wrapping your hive to keep off the worst of the winter chill winds also helps; this also has the added benefit of keeping woodpeckers at bay if you are troubled by them.
The next item is a mouse guard so many of us put them on too late, August or September is best, not only will the mouse guard help keep mice out it also serves as a guard against the last of the summer wasps by making the entrance easier to defend, but a word of caution, spend just a little more than the one with round holes, use the one with arches, this will rip hardly any of the pollen from the returning bees legs.
