Robin Cabin Nester by Simon King

Designed in collaboration with naturalist and wildlife expert Simon King, this Robin Cabin Nester reflects years of observation into how small garden birds choose nesting and sheltering sites. Thoughtfully combining easy access with discreet protection, it provides a safe space for nesting as well as year-round shelter.

The open entrance allows birds to enter freely, while the nesting and roosting area is cleverly concealed behind a side wall to help protect occupants from predators and disturbance. In addition to nesting, birds may also use the cabin as a refuge during cold, wet or windy weather. By offering a warm, sheltered roost, the cabin helps birds conserve vital body fat, supporting their survival through harsher conditions.

A strong metal frame gives the cabin durability and stability, while the roof features a cosy liner to provide added insulation. The rattan landing platform and low dividing wall create a natural transition between the entrance and the sheltered nesting or roosting space, making the cabin both practical and inviting.

Recommended bird species:

Ideal for robins, wrens, wagtails and spotted flycatchers, as well as other small birds that favour open-fronted nesters and sheltered roosting spaces.

Where to site:

Position the cabin in a quiet, sheltered area of the garden, such as against a wall, fence, shed, porch or within dense vegetation. Fix it 1–2 metres above ground, ensuring it is well supported and does not sway. Sites with nearby cover, such as shrubs or hedging, will help birds feel safe when entering and leaving.

Care and maintenance:

Leave the cabin undisturbed during the breeding season. After the nesting period has finished, check the nester and remove any old nesting material if necessary. Wipe gently with a dry or slightly damp cloth, avoiding harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners. Ensure fixings remain secure throughout the year.
